About
Modic Clinic in Oslo was established in 2018 by physical therapist Astrid Landewall, with Prof. Dr. Med., specialist in general practice, Even Lærum as the physician in charge.
Dr. Lærum is one of Norway’s most highly recognized specialists in musculoskeletal health and has in‑depth knowledge of Modic‑related problems. Among other roles, he has been a visiting professor in Ringe, where the research group with Claus Manniche and Hanne Albert conducted groundbreaking studies in this field.
Landewall is a physical therapist with Staatsexamen from Berlin in 1997, with experience working as a physical therapist in Berlin, Stockholm and Oslo, as well as in both clinical and advisory roles in the municipal sector in Sweden. She also has experience as a medical exercise therapist, cross‑country skiing and track‑and‑field coach, mindfulness instructor, and coach.
Based on Dr. Lærum’s unique expertise and experience, combined with the research of Manniche and Albert, the clinic places particular emphasis on close follow‑up, rehabilitation, and training over a 24‑month period. This has shown that patients with multiple diagnoses beyond Modic changes also have the potential to achieve good outcomes from the treatment.
Since Dr. Lærum’s retirement in December 2023, Modic Clinic has collaborated with three different specialist physicians and is part of the multidisciplinary Vika Physical Therapy Institute and Medical Center in Oslo.
As of 2025, approximately 400 patients have started treatment at Modic Clinic. The results are well documented and are regularly published on the clinic’s website: modicklinikken.oslo.no/resultater
Modic Clinic also collaborates with the Norwegian Back Association (Ryggforeningen i Norge)
